POLITICS AS AN ART

Conspicuously, since human demeanor (behaviour) is unpredictable, the art of politics is therefore seen as a non-scientific branch of learning. Hence, one may not be wrong to say politics is regarded as an art due its limitation as a science. In that instance, politics as an art is therefore regarded as the method or strategy employed by politicians to conduct the affairs of human society as well as political activities. However, it is imperative to note that politics an art is largely influenced by the common sense, intuition, and imagination of the politicians in the conduct of political activities. Therefore, it is believed in the imaginary, creativity and practical knowledge of politician in the process of resource allocation or values in the society.                                      ...

SCIENCE OF POLITICS (POLITICS AS SCIENCE)

Over the years, there has been a controversy among scholars (the behaviorists and traditionalists) on whether the study of politics is science or not. In the first instance, what is science? Science is defined as the observation, identification, verification, experimental investigation and theoretical explanation of natural phenomena. Simply put, science is an organized body of knowledge as well as method and system of deriving truth. In corroboration to the above definitions, an American humorist, Josh Billing (1818 – 1885) asserts that “science is the literature of truth”. Sequel to the above, it can be deduced that scientific knowledge seems to mean any body of systematic knowledge of well-defined area of inquiry. Be that as it may, for adequate understanding, the following are some of the assumption and principle that characterised scientific knowledge; a)       Observation and empiricism: This is based on what is observable, verification and e...

THE MARXIAN THEORY OF POLITICAL ECONOMY AND SOCIAL CLASS ANALYSIS

According to Marxian political economy, “the mode of production of material life, determines the character of political process of life”. Simply put, the above statement is not unconnected with the book titled “Communist Manifesto” that was jointly written by Karl Marx and Fredrick Engel in 1932. Karl Marx argued that the history of human existence is essentially the history of class struggle between the rich (bourgeoisie) and the poor (proletariat), between the oppressor and the oppressed. Be that as it may, the mode of production refers to the techniques of production, social relation among individuals in the productive cycle and the means by which the means of production is acquired. However, social class was reported to have thrown up two classes of people, but this cannot be hurriedly conclude without the pre-knowledge of social class. Therefore, social class refers to a group of people differing from each other in terms of their access and relation to the means of production. T...

POLITICS AND ETHICS

Ethics can be said to be morality aspect of man’s life. Put simply, it is that branch of learning that deals with the values relating to human conduct with respect to rightness and wrongness of certain action. According, Chandler and Plano (1988) Ethics are the rules and standards governing the moral conduct of the members of an organization. Politics on the other hand, in the word of David Easton (1963) is the authoritative allocation of values in the society. It is imperative to note that “values” in the above definition means all things sought after in the society such as wealth, prestige, honour etc. Be that as it may, ethics sometimes has no place in politics. This is because what is morally wrong can be politically right e.g. political corruption. Political corruption is politically right in eyes of the politician because they believe the society we live in is not morally upright. Therefore they see nothing wrong with political corruption. This coincides with the assert...

GENDER ISSUE

Denotatively, gender simply means the categorization of sex into male and female. When we talk about gender discrimination, fingers are always pointed at women. This is because gender discrimination specifically painted the image of men to be superior while that of women to be inferior. Women marginalization therefore can be defined as an act of sidelining or confinement of women to a marginal space particularly in the contemporary political activities of Africans. However, this notion has been criticized on the basis that women are no less inferior to men. It is often said in a phrase that “what a man can do, a woman can do better”. This has led to contention, controversy and what I described as hullabaloo among the scholars. click the link below to download full pdf. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y7Yz9XD8sey7Ke6RcDhBNfdjoDBCr7RH/view?usp=sharing
